How to organize your closet with an app (in one afternoon)

A closet you can see is a closet you wear. The goal of digitizing isn't tidiness for its own sake — it's making every piece visible and combinable, so decisions take seconds.

The one-afternoon method

  1. Cull first (30 min): anything that doesn't fit or hasn't been worn in a year goes to a donate pile. Don't photograph what you won't wear.
  2. Photograph in batches (45 min): lay each piece flat on a plain surface in decent light. One item per photo, edges in frame.
  3. Let the app do the data entry: a good closet app identifies garment type, color, material, brand, and fit details from the photo — typing all that manually is why most people quit.
  4. Organize by how you dress: categories (tees vs dress shirts vs polos, sneakers vs boots) beat rainbow order — you reach for a kind of item, not a color.
