How to know what actually matches

Matching isn't taste, it's a small set of rules. Learn four and you'll assemble outfits faster than men who "have an eye."

Rule 1: match color temperature

Warm goes with warm (browns, tans, olive, burgundy). Cool goes with cool (navy, gray, white, black). Mixing temperatures is possible but it's an advanced move — start by staying in one family.

Rule 2: match formality levels

Every piece has a formality score. Dress shoes with athletic joggers fail not because of color but because they're three levels apart. Keep everything within one level of everything else.

Rule 3: one statement per outfit

A patterned overshirt, bold sneakers, or a strong color — pick one. Everything else stays quiet and lets it work.

Rule 4: leather matches leather

Belt and shoes in the same family (black with black, brown with brown) is the oldest rule because it's the most visible when broken.

When patterns meet

Vary the scale: a fine-striped shirt under a large-check overshirt works; two same-sized patterns fight. When unsure, one pattern plus solids never fails.
