Business casual, actually explained
Business casual is the dress code nobody defines and everybody judges. Here is the working definition: tailored separates without the formality of a suit and tie.
The reliable formula
- Top: collared shirt (oxford, dress shirt, quality polo) or fine-gauge knit. Tie optional and increasingly rare.
- Bottom: chinos or wool trousers. Dark, hole-free straight-leg denim passes in most modern offices — read the room first.
- Layer: blazer, unstructured sport coat, or smart knit. This is the piece that makes the outfit "business."
- Shoes: loafers, derbies, brogues, or immaculate minimal leather sneakers. Athletic sneakers are the giveaway.
What's changed lately
Ties are near-extinct outside client-facing finance and law; knitwear has replaced the blazer in many offices; and sneaker tolerance is real but conditional — leather, minimal, spotless.
The two failure modes
- Too casual: graphic tees, shorts, distressed anything, gym shoes.
- Trying too hard: full suit and tie in a polo office reads as out of touch. One step above the room, never three.
