What to wear to a job interview: a man’s field guide
The rule that never fails: dress one small step above the company's daily dress code. You are signaling respect and judgment, not fashion. Here is the formula by environment.
Corporate (law, finance, consulting)
- Navy or charcoal suit, white or light-blue dress shirt, conservative tie, dark leather dress shoes and belt that match each other.
- No exceptions here — under-dressing costs more than over-dressing saves.
Business casual (most offices)
- Blazer or unstructured sport coat, oxford or dress shirt (no tie needed), chinos or wool trousers, leather loafers or clean derbies.
- The blazer is doing the interview's work. You can remove it if the room is casual; you cannot conjure one you didn't bring.
Startup / creative
- Dark straight-leg jeans or chinos, a fitted polo, henley, or quality tee under an overshirt or knit, clean minimal sneakers or boots.
- "Casual" still means intentional: fit and condition matter more than formality.
